Creative Movement

Creative movement is a class that focuses on movement quality, self-expression, and the love of dance as an art form while strengthening motor skills. Students will be introduced to dynamics, time, effort and spacing through imaginative and improvisational movement. Students will develop the ability to fully express themselves to music with not only creative dance exercises but with the aids of props like balloons, scarves, ribbons, sticks, hoops and small percussion instruments. Creative movement is the beginning step for building a passion for dance and music that will last a lifetime.

Defined Motion Dance Team

Mayama Dance Team – “Defined Motion”
By Audition Only

Defined Motion is a group of Mayama students that dance together and compete in dance competitions as well as perform locally.

This group of dancers work very hard individually and as a team to execute difficult choreography and
dance technique.

Being part of the dance team helps a dancer to reach new heights. They begin to approach their dance
education with new goals of excellence. Their weekly classes become stepping-stones towards improving
execution of technique and performance. It changes the mind set from “I dance as a hobby” to “I am a
dancer!”

Summer Dance Intensives

3 day dance intensives, Levels 3 +. Cost $150, only $135 if registered before May 31st.

Dance Intensives (levels 3+): Do you want to really improve this Summer in specific styles? Then these are the three day intensives for you! Each day dancers will concentrate on technique and challenging combinations to rise to new levels in the below styles. Get a leg up during this concentrated intensives. Please bring a snack each day. Each camp ends with a performance for family members during the last 15 minutes of the last day!

Jazz Intensive
Our summer Jazz intensive explores traditional contemporary styles of jazz in a fun, energetic atmosphere. We will learn and explore the history of jazz dance and it’s impact on our culture. Classes begin with a warm-up that concentrates on flexibility, coordination and strength, followed by progressions across the floor, center work and combinations. Beginner students learn fundamental jazz steps and basic vocabulary while intermediate classes focus on body placement and proper technique. All which are skills that aid in the execution of the strong and sharp movements that make this form so popular.

Hip Hop Intensive
Hip Hop elements in action. The students in this intensive will be learning original forms of hip hop, house, locking, popping, and breakdance along with the history of the movement and culture. There will be movement concepts and patterns across the floor at the start of the classes and a full combination to follow. The students will also be learning different performance skills which they will put into action when they perform on the last day. This intensive is not to be missed!

Musical Theatre Sing! Act! Dance! Intensive, ages 9+
In Music Theatre Workshop we will explore these various art forms that together make the Broadway musical so thrilling. Music theatre vocal technique, song interpretation, dance, and staged movement will be explored. There will be opportunities for both solo and/or ensemble singing culminating in a short staged musical number. Work of this kind can help develop confidence and stage presence in young dancers and singers.

Ballet Intensive
Recognized as the foundation form for studio dance, Ballet emphasizes technique, discipline, musicality and vocabulary. In this summer intensive, students will work on mastering the fundamentals of classical ballet. By working at the barre, across the floor, and then with choreography students will enrich their artistry as well as build a strong base for additional dance forms.

Tap Intensive
This tap technique class will consist of learning the alphabet of tap. Focusing mainly on rhythm and weight of each step, stomp, and stamp. Be prepared for different rhythm patterns, instrumental changes, and recognition of the “basics” provided in tap. The class will start with a warm-up, across the floor, center, and occasional patterns on the barre. A combination will be started the first day of class and presented to parents on the final day.

Summer Dance Camps

Weekly Summer Dance Camps & Intensives

$150 / weekly intensive, $135 if you register before May 31st.

Dance Camps (Levels 1 & 2) are designed to explore the art of dance: technique, creativity, choreography and performance. Dancers will be doing various exercises to expose them to the distinct style of dance and music. These camps will be fun and imaginative and will help each dancer improve their dance skills. Each day there will be a lunch and/or snack break, so please pack a sack lunch. There will be a performance for family members during the last 15 minutes of the third day of camp!

Movement Exploration and Discovery Ages 6-9
Only Join Mayama for an exciting summer intensive that introduces students to various forms of movement. Each day, dancers will explore a different techniques with multiple instructors. This is a great opportunity for students to try new forms and see what sparks their interest. The curriculum will consist of Jazz, Ballet and Hip Hop.

Jazz Camp, levels 1 & 2
